Day trip to Positano Italy – The Jewel of the Amalfi Coast

Day trip to Positano Italy on the Amalfi Coast

Positano in Italy is an old fishing village located on the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Here is everything you need to know for a day trip to Positano.

The small town of Positano became a trendy tourist destination in the 1950s when the Amalfi Coast became popular with the rich and famous visiting Italy. Positano looks like a beautiful decoration with all the colorful houses hanging on top of each other on the cliff.

How to get to Positano on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

From Sorrento

You will find the SITA Bus stops for the Amalfi Coast in Piazza Giovanni Battista De Curtis in Sorrento. Check the timetable here. It takes between 40 and 50 minutes to get from Sorrento to Positano-Chiesa Nuova. The tickets are called Unico Costiera. You can buy a simple one for 2.20€ or a 90-minutes ticket for 3.40€. Also, if you plan to move around the coast, the most convenient is the 6.80€ ticket valid 24 hours.

You have to buy the tickets before boarding the bus, from newspaper stands and tobacco shops anywhere, as well as from the train station in Sorrento.

In July and August, you will probably stand on these buses. If you go in another period, choose a seat on the right going from Sorrento to Positano, to fully enjoy the view.

As I said in my Amalfi post – if you plan to rent a car, don’t. The road is difficult to drive, and you will never find a parking space in Positano.

What to expect from Positano, Italy – Amalfi Coast

Positano is a place to enjoy, not to visit with a list. Just wander the streets, up and downhill, and stop to take all those amazing photos. Spend a half-day at the beach, treat yourself to local specialties at any restaurant, explore the small shops.

Enjoy the beach and the sea for a few hours in Positano.

You will find a lot of authentic ceramic workshops, leather sandals made on the spot, linen clothing, and a lot of local products like limoncello. It’s not just the usual selection of souvenir shops cute useless things. Most of the craft shops also offer worldwide shipping. You can even buy something that you can’t carry home, like painted ceramics furniture or a crate of limoncello.

Positano is not a cheap destination, but you probably deserve a day of indulgence. Spend the night if your time and budget allow it. There are many small hotels, and they all have spectacular views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the mountain.

Other things to do in Positano, Italy

If you need more activities, there is plenty to choose from in Positano. Rent a kayak, or try stand-up paddling. Another option is to rent a small boat to explore the coast or join a boat tour.

If you prefer hiking, there are a few hiking trails in the area. You can walk them on your own or with a guide.

This was my day trip to Positano, Italy. Next, explore the amazing Capri Island and Amalfi too.

  1. Beautifully written. Makes me wnt to go instead of Turkey this year. Except for the “not the cheapest” bit. Not this year anyway!
    Great photos

  2. Oooh! Positano looks like an interesting city. Pretty cool that it has some recent history behind the town. I like that the homes over the mountain oversee the landscape. Glad you enjoyed your time out there overall!
