I’ve been in Campania a few times by now and this is my ideal 3-day itinerary to reach both the Amalfi Coast and Capri Island.
Where to stay
I chose Sorrento as a base to explore the region. It’s easy to reach from Naples or directly from the airport, and it’s well connected to both Capri Island and the towns on the Amalfi Coast. Also, if you have more time, you can easily reach Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, or Ercolano.
We stayed in a B&B-Relais Correale Rooms & Garden, a beautiful garden at the heart of Sorrento. Nothing beats a colorful breakfast under the citrus trees.
Also, Sorrento is somewhat less expensive than Positano or Amalfi.
When to visit
Campania has some great weather throughout the year. July and August are extremely crowded, and the prices go through the roof. I think autumn and spring are perfect to visit the area. I’ve even seen people swimming in the sea in December, but I think it’s a bit of a stretch. October is probably the limit for a comfortable swim.
3 days Amalfi Coast Itinerary
The best way to explore the area is to take day trips from your base in Sorrento. Click on each place for a detailed post about it.
More about Sorrento, the base of your Amalfi Coast Itinerary
Though these are 3 full days, Sorrento itself deserves some time to explore. It’s a beautiful city that has been there for 2500 years, on a cliff overlooking the sea. It was founded by Greeks and became popular among the wealthy Romans who wanted to have villas here.
They make olive oil and wine in this area of Campania, but the star product here is the lemon. Try the local dishes based on lemon, from starters to dessert, and finish with a glass of limoncello. You will find the lemon everywhere. There are entire shops with products related to the famous sorrentine lemons.
Browse through the souvenir shops, where you’ll find any little thing you can think of with a lemon touch.
What else
This was my 3 days itinerary to explore the Amalfi Coast and Capri Island. If you have more time, you should visit either Pompeii or Ercolano for an impression of life 2000 years ago. Check out my posts about them with the links above. Also, walk the trail up Mt. Vesuvius for the best view from above over Naples Bay.

It looks amazing! Have always wanted to visit Italy.
I hope you will visit it soon.
Some great tips in here! It’s wonderful that you managed to fit in so much in such little time.
Well, I had a few things on my list for Capri, but for the rest I just went with the flow and let myself enjoy everything.
I have not been to the Amalfi Coast, it looks lovely

It is a beautiful place, hope you get the chance to visit it.
Thankyou what a beautiful part of the world, all those lemons. Great read.
So glad you liked it. It is a beautiful area 🙂
Great to get such a detailed itinerary/itineraries for the region.
Thanks for sharing
It’s one of my favorite regions in Italy. My next post will be about the food in the area 🙂
Amalfi coast is awesome. But go to Ischia which to me is a hidden gem as it is not touristy. #italy
I was aiming for Procida island, but I think I’ll make a combo of the two islands. 🙂
Beautiful places, I would love to explore this
part of Italy as I’ve never been.. but would love to
know more..
All looks so lovely and tempting!
Great advice and observations! There is nothing like Italy and the Amalfi Coast.
I’m going to keep this one for the future. Thanks.
I hope you’ll get to use it soon 🙂
It is so cool that you got to stay out in Amalfi Coast and Capri Island! I love the breakfast – you can’t go wrong with cheese and meat. The lemon shop looks pretty neat. Glad you enjoyed your time out there!

Oh, that lemon shop was one of many. I spent a couple of hours just wondering around there(a bit of shopping too).
Amalfi coast is absolutely stunning! We loved Minori and Positano 🙂

I love the Amalfi coast, but despite having been to Naples twice I still haven’t manage to go to Capri.
Well…, next time!
I’d like to go to Procida Island next time I go to Naples.
I love Italy! Just back from a trip to Rome and Naples.
Looks Lovely!
The photos looked so beautiful! Dying to go to Italy one day.
You have to, it’s beautiful north to south, lots of history and culture and amazing food.
Was recently here too and now I miss it!
I always think I’ll go back to the places I love sometime 🙂
I’ve never been to the Amalfi coast sadly, it looks so pretty! It’s definitely my next destination when I go to Italy!
