About Italy
Italy is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Every year, millions come to discover its treasures. Everyone wishes to see Venice at least once in this lifetime or wander through Rome’s attractions. However, there is so much to see in every part of the peninsula that no one ever left saying: “I’m done, I’ve seen it all!”.
But let’s see about some more practical issues first.
Visa Requirements
Italy is part of the European Union and also of the Schengen Area. If you’re from the EU, UK, or a US citizen, you don’t need a visa to enter the country. Click here to check if you need a visa and how to apply for it.
A useful tool to sort the documents you need to travel is iVisa.
Where is Italy and how to get there
Italy is in southern Europe, between the Adriatic, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian Seas. It is connected to the rest of Europe through flights from virtually everywhere. You can also arrive by train, passing through Austria or Switzerland. Of course, you can also drive from anywhere in Europe.
Alternatively, ferries and cruise lines are stopping in Italian ports.
Transport
Public transport is well organized, especially in the northern part of the Italian peninsula. The only thing to be careful with regarding the trains system is that different companies operate different routes and sometimes from different locations.Â
Driving is also a good option just about everywhere, though parking may seem impossible in some places.
Money
Italy uses Euros. Credit cards are widely accepted, but some cash comes in handy for tipping and other small expenses. ATMs and exchange offices are available in all tourist areas.
Accommodation
In Italy, you can stay in palaces, traditional farms, houses hanging on a cliff, luxurious boutique hotels, anywhere you fancy. I always rely on booking.com to find the best accommodations.
Best places to visit in Italy
How do you know which is the best place to travel to in Italy?
I fell in love with Italy a long time ago. I love the history, the architecture, the breathtaking views on both coasts, the sunny south, and the more serious northern Italy. Also, the umbrella pines and the aqueducts in Rome, the baroque architecture of Lecce, and the white cities of Ostuni or Monopoli.
I’ve never seen a more turquoise sea than in Capri or a more charming image than the colorful houses hanging on top of each other in Positano.
I hiked Mt. Vesuvius and climbed Mt. Etna. I searched for Ancient Rome from Via Appia Antica to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Ostia Antica.
I could never decide about the best place to visit in Italy.
There are endless things to say about Italian food. Every region has its amazing food. I’ve written about the best food in Campania, the delicious things to taste in Rome or the ultimate city of food, Bologna. There are even rules for coffee in Italy.
I also made a top of the most romantic cities in Italy. Still, I’m not sure I could say which is the best place to visit. There are so many places worth seeing that it is probably impossible to choose only one place in Italy as the best to travel to.
I guess the best thing to do is to always plan your next trip. Where to this time?
