About the country
Denmark is one of the most advanced countries in Europe and the world. It’s one of the oldest monarchies and, at the same time, a progressist nation with a high living standard. You can see that from my first impressions about Copenhagen.
Apart from the territory in the Scandinavian Peninsula, the Danish monarch also rules over the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
Is Denmark in the EU?
Denmark has been a member of the European Union since 1973. It is also part of the Schengen Area.
Visa Requirements
Residents of the EU, UK, or the US, don’t need a visa to enter Denmark. Check here to find the complete list of countries that require a visa.
Where is Denmark and how to get there
Denmark is the southernmost country of the Scandinavian Peninsula. It’s very well connected with the rest of Europe through flights, but also trains and ferries from Germany or Sweden. The main airport is the one next to the capital, Copenhagen.
Transport
Public transport is very well organized, not only in Copenhagen but also in the rest of the country. The train system is also well connected with Sweden.
Denmark Time
What time is it in Denmark? It uses Central European Time (CET), which is GMT+1. So, if it’s 12 PM in London, it is 1 PM in Denmark.
Money
Denmark is an expensive country, but not the most expensive in the Scandinavian Peninsula. The currency is the Danish Krone (DKK). As part of the European Union, they had the option to use Euro but preferred to keep their own currency.
Credit cards are widely used, and you don’t need really need cash, at least in Copenhagen.
Accommodation
Accommodation in ranges from trendy hotels in the urban areas to cozy rustic places or elegant castle stays. I always rely on booking.com to find the best places to stay.
Why visit Denmark
Because Danes invented hygge, a concept of living well. It’s hard to translate, but it more or less means enjoying the moment. It can be anything from a lazy Sunday with breakfast in bed to pausing for a coffee and just being in the moment.
Other reasons to visit include castles and beautiful beaches. It’s a clean country where people take care of the environment. There are plenty of things to do in Copenhagen and around it, Aarhus, or Aalborg. An interesting place to visit on your Copenhagen itinerary is Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed free nation.
Food in Denmark
Food is another reason to visit. It’s incredibly fresh and varied. In the last decades, Denmark has been leading the New Nordic Cuisine movement. It’s been going back to the roots and reinventing traditional dishes.
