I chose Sorrento as my base to explore the Amalfi Coast. From here, you can easily take a one-day trip to Amalfi, Positano, Capri Island, Pompeii, or to Ercolano.
Getting to Amalfi from Sorrento
You will find the SITA Bus stops for the Amalfi Coast in Piazza Giovanni Battista De Curtis in Sorrento. Check the timetable here. The ride takes about an hour and 40 minutes from Sorrento and a ticket costs 6.80€.
Hiring a car?
The Amalfi Coast is an extremely scenic route, but I wouldn’t drive on it for the world. There is a lot of traffic, especially in summer. Also, there are many places on the road where 2 cars can’t pass at the same time. You will have a mountain on one hand and an abyss on the other. It’s a lot better to enjoy the views with an experienced driver that knows where to stop and when to signal before entering a curve.
What to see in Amalfi, IT
Amalfi isn’t really a place to visit with a checklist. There is the Duomo di Sant’Andrea in the central Plaza, you can’t miss it even if you wanted. The Paper Museum (Il Museo della carta) is worth a visit while wandering uphill through the Valley of the Mills (Valle dei Mulini).
You can have lunch in one of the small Piazzas that you come across. Order the very reasonable house wine with your pasta, and don’t be surprised if the waiter will just scribble your bill on a piece of paper.
Ravello & Atrani
Head to Ravello with a local Sita bus. Villa Rufolo in Ravello is the site of that famous panoramic view of the sea with the 2 church domes and an umbrella pine tree in between. I’m sure you’ve seen a photo somewhere, a screensaver perhaps. From Ravello, you can hike for about an hour to the town of Atrani. There are a lot of stairs, but the walk is downhill, so you don’t have to be very fit to take it. From Atrani, you can also head back to Amalfi on a pedestrian path above the main road. This second walk should take between 20 and 25 minutes.
Before you know it, you’ll be tired and relaxed and have a lot of shareable pictures from your day in Amalfi.
