Planning to go camping? 5 great camping gadgets to take with you

Camping Gadgets make the whole experience a lot better

If you’ve got a taste for the natural world, nothing beats taking on the great outdoors. Especially if you have the right camping gadgets with you. Camping is a traditional pursuit that’s stayed incredibly relevant through the years thanks to the opportunity it offers to reconnect with nature and get away from the distractions of today’s hustle and bustle world.

And while it also offers the chance to disconnect from technology, even something as simple as lighting a fire and sleeping under the stars cannot completely escape the grasp of a few handy gadgets. Indeed, why wouldn’t you make the fundamentals of your camping trip that bit easier if you can?

Camping gadgets you need

In this guide, we’ve put together a list of gadgets that won’t take away from being at one with nature but will help you enjoy it that little bit more.

An easy-to-use fire starter

You may feel a certain level of hubris when it comes to being able to light a fire using only nature’s tools. If you don’t or, more likely, you can’t do that, then getting an easy-to-use fire starter is a must-have for making the process approximately a million times easier.

We’d recommend an electric or waterproof lighter if you don’t fancy taking things on with some flint and kindling.

Wireless power bank

Gadgets need power, and a distant lack of AC mains power out in the woods means you need some portable power solutions to keep your essential tech going for the duration of your trip.

Start by making sure you have the right batteries for your simple stuff. That might be button batteries for your watch or some AA batteries for your torch. For your fancier gizmos, get a wireless power bank, which will be your saving grace when your phone is running low.

Mosquito Repeller

If you’ve ever felt like mosquito spray does absolutely nothing to dissuade mosquitos from feasting on you, try a more technologically advanced repeller device. There are a few different types of repellers available – we’d recommend taking a look at a fuel-powered heat-activated device that puts a scent-free forcefield around you to fend off pesky critters.

Water filter

If you’re going hard on your camping trip, perhaps hiking over a few days where you can’t carry all the supplies you need, a water filter comes in incredibly handy for giving you an endless, safe-to-drink water supply – as long as you have a place to get water.

You can get multi-stage filters or simpler water-purifying bottles – the important thing is to make sure you get one that works effectively.

what3words

A free-to-download app for your phone, what3words kicked up a fuss upon its release a few years ago as a potential lifesaver in a variety of scenarios. The app takes the entire planet, splits it into 3x3m squares, and gives each of those squares a unique, three-word tag.

That means, if you get in trouble, you can make a call and help someone triangulate your exact location using those three words in question. A simple yet incredibly clever piece of tech that’s great to have on your phone just in case.

Unless you’re feeling particularly passionate about enjoying a truly basic camping experience, gadgets like those mentioned above will make your trip even more enjoyable without encroaching too much on what makes camping great in the first place. So, go forth and be at one with nature, just with a little technology by your side, too.
