Ghost Tour Prague – Legends and Mysteries Walking Tour in Prague

Prague at nightfall is perfect for a ghost stories tour

As I was planning my trip to Prague, I was looking for some interesting tours to complete my Prague attractions itinerary. My picks were a Prague brewery tour and also McGee’s ghost and legends tour. I think I got a winning combo and some fun activities.

McGee’s Ghost Tours

McGee’s tours focus on the darkest history of Prague. Stories of murders, tragedies, alchemists, and lost love are all part of their tours. They are not silly tours – no one will sneak up to scare you. However, their stories of Prague will introduce some controversial people in the city’s history. Some of them might still be out there..haunting the very places you are visiting.

Prague, Ghosts, and Legends

Prague is undoubtedly beautiful. The Gothic buildings in the Old Town are stunning during the day and even more so when lit at night. But when the crowds disappear, the city goes quiet, and mist makes its way from the river, Prague suddenly becomes the perfect scene for ghost stories.

Some of Prague’s dark stories are related to the city being a popular spot with alchemists from the 15th century. Others have at their center a violent death that is said to leave an unrested soul wandering around. Broken hearts are also good reasons to stay back and haunt the places where they lived their love.

Ghost and Legends of the Old Town Tour

The Prague Ghost Tour tells a few stories of people that can be documented up to a point. I don’t want to be spoiling your tour, so I won’t go into details, but I’ll just give you a few hints.

Meeting Point

The meeting point for Prague Ghost Tour is on Tynska street, on one side of the famous Church of Our Lady before Týn, one of the most striking buildings in Prague. The tour will end at the same church, with a very interesting story too.

Our Guide

Our guide, Victoria, could be an actress. She is a great storyteller, fun and entertaining. Considering she has been doing the Prague Ghost and Legends Tour for almost 7 years, her enthusiasm is amazing and infectious.

At nightfall, the group gathers and starts the tour after a short introduction. Every 5 minutes or so, we stop for a new story.

A couple of the stories have at their center two of the most important landmarks of Prague: the Astronomical Clock and Tyn Church. Another tale is about a famous event, the Defenestration in Prague. In case you never heard the term before (like me!), defenestration is the act of throwing someone out the window. The one in Prague in 1618 had serious religious implications, as it involved Protestants defenestrating (!) the Catholic delegation. The story has a funny moment as well, but I’ll let Victoria tell you about it. Interestingly enough, the morning after the tour, we saw a painting of the same event at the Lobkowicz Palace Art Gallery.

Final Thoughts

We had a very entertaining evening on the Prague ghost tour, better than I expected. I can say we ended up learning a few things about the city’s history too. The moral is that behind any balcony, window, or door in Old Town Prague, there’s not necessarily a ghost, but definitely a story, or even a legend.

Useful info

Prague Ghost Tour will take you on a walk on hidden streets around the Old Town. The tour lasts 90 minutes, and the distances aren’t long. However, my suggestion is to wear comfortable shoes.

One other thing to consider is Prague’s weather. During the late autumn and winter months, when the gloomy weather adds to the mystery of the ghost tour, it also gets bitter cold. Make sure to dress warm enough and finish the evening with a mulled wine.
