Craft Beer Tasting in Vienna – A Fun Evening Out

Craft beer tasting in Vienna

You know I’m all about tasting experiences. Whether it’s a food tour, a wine tasting, or a beer tour, I’m in. So a craft beer tasting in Vienna sounded like a perfect activity. Here it is!

Craft Beer in Vienna

I’ve been interested in craft beer for the last couple of years, so I try to find a tour or tasting everywhere I go. Any excuse to have some good beer will do, don’t you think?

Prime Tours

I’ve written about this company before. I joined a Spooky Vienna Tour and a Free Walking Tour with them. I was very happy with the communication, booking system as well as the tours with them.

Meeting Point

The tasting takes place at Chicago Craft Beer Bar and Deep Pot Pizza in Passauer Platz. It’s a cozy place opposite a church. Take a few minutes to enter the church as well if you arrive early. It’s a striking church, very narrow and one of the few Gothic churches in Vienna. Inside, it’s beautifully simple with an impressive altar and some stained glass work.

Anyway, let’s get back to the bar and our beer tasting. They have 12 beers on tap, which makes for a good selection.

Our Guide, Anna

After arriving at the bar, we met our guide, Anna. Anna was a wine-girl, before finding her way and discovering craft beer (her words). That sounds like me. I used to hate beer before discovering hoppy craft beers.

So, on with it.

Apart from us and Anna, there were 4 more German guys. I noticed during our Microbreweries Tour in Prague as well that it’s usually men who book this type of tour.

The tour started with a snack, some local goodies including cheese sausage, cheeses, pistachio, and some pears. A good base for some beer.

A snack to go with your beer

Anna started her tasting journey with a few questions to find out about everyone’s preferences. Then, she introduced us to our first sample beer. We also had a Prime Tours Craft Beer Tasting tasting sheet prepared to write our impressions about each beer.

We had 4 different beers, starting with the lightest and finishing with a strong 9 ABV stout.

A delicious IPA

She took us on a tasting journey from the beaches of Hawaii to rainy Scotland. At first, Anna taught us (or teased us) to look at the beer’s appearance. Then, we smelled the beer and wrote our impressions. Then we took our first (well-deserved) sip. The first beer came from Hawaii, and it tasted like a day at the beach, sunny and fruity.

The second beer happened to be one of my favorite IPAs. We also learned about the history of India Pale Ale beers. Anna shared a lot of information about the beers and locals’ drinking habits.

The last beer was something completely different, a strong, flavorful stout.

A strong finish to our tasting

I liked the beer selection and the stories. If there’s one thing I would have wanted, would have been to try an Austrian beer among the tastings.

However, it was a fun experience, a good way to spend an evening out in Vienna.

Prost! Cheers!

Useful info

The Craft Beer Tasting takes about two hours, but you can spend the rest of the evening at the bar if you want to have one more beer on your own or with the rest of the group.
