Monopoli Puglia – Day 3 of the Southern Italy Itinerary

Monopoli Italy

Monopoli is a small white town in Puglia, on the blue coast of the Adriatic Sea. When you come to Monopoli, before you know it, you will feel the time slowing down to the rhythm of the sunny south, that of Puglia.

Getting to Monopoli, Puglia

From Bari Centrale, you can get to Monopoli in 35 minutes with a regional Puglia train (3.20 euro). Check the timetables and book tickets here.

Be careful not to choose a Freccia train which saves 15 minutes for an additional 15 euro. 1 euro/minute is pretty steep if you ask me. You can easily make this a day trip from Bari, but I loved staying in Monopoli for a couple of nights.

Where to stay in Monopoli

Choose a good B&B in the Old Center. Then, enjoy the sea and the streets. I stayed at Carpe Diem and loved it. They have nice rooms, a friendly host, and some amazing breakfast on the rooftop terrace.

What to do in Monopoli, Puglia

You can visit the castle, enjoy a walk in the port or maybe take a bath in the sea. Walking in the Old Center maze, you’ll come by a Pallazo, a small square, or a church at every corner. Also, the churches are free to visit in Italy, and most of them are worth a glimpse.

The Castle of Carlo V was part of the Spanish fortifications.

In the evening, head to Piazza Garibaldi and choose one of the terraces there. You’ll find good food and a warm atmosphere. I loved Vini e Panini very much, so I returned the next evening.

In the morning, enjoy breakfast outside if possible, take your swimsuit with you, and head to the station for a day trip to Polignano a Mare.
