Non touristy things to do in Rome – My list for a week in Rome, Italy

Non touristy things to do in Rome

For my next trip to Rome, I plan on visiting its lesser-known attractions. I’ve been researching some non-touristy things to do in Rome, and I came up with quite a few. So, I’ll have a week in Rome, and this is what I have on my to-do list so far:

Non-touristy things to do in Rome:

Poppies on Via Appia Antica
  • Peek through the most famous keyhole in Rome-The Aventine Keyhole at the Priory of the Knights of Malta.
  • Catch a sunset from a bridge over the Tiber.
  • Visit the Cat Sanctuary at Torre Argentina-the place where Julius Caesar was murdered.
  • The Museum of Pasta was on my list, but apparently, it’s closed indefinitely.
  • Try a pasta-making class. I tried a food tour in Rome, and it was great. This time, I want to try cooking.
  • Probably the best-known place on my list is the Terme di Caracalla.
  • Monte Testaccio is an ancient Roman dump place where they threw as many broken pots and shards as to create this artificial mountain.
  • Mercato Testaccio is the best place to try freshly deep-fried anchovies. They are a must-try in Rome. Ask for the “carciofi alla giudia“. I never found these delicacies anywhere outside of Rome, so I’ll have to get there and try some.
  • While we’re at the delicacies chapter, I’m adding a Cacio e pepe pasta in Trastevere.
  • Get to know the Pigneto neighborhood.
  • Last but not least: Ostia Antica. Maybe even stop at a beach in Ostia.

I hope at least some of the points of my to-do list in Rome for this week will become blog posts on their own when they grow up. Just check the links for each one of them.

In the meantime, check out my post about things I want to see in Napoli or the Puglia itinerary.
